My second fight
Some thoughts on Konrad's second chessboxing appearance in London. I received the confirmation that I will have an opponent to fight only three days before the fight, so for quite a long time I was suspended in a state uncertainty as to whether or not I will be fighting at all.
But since we are now on the very day of the fight and I am now in London, I think I can be pretty confident that it is actually going to happen, even though it won't really be how it was planned from the start.
I was quite looking forward to having a chance to redeem myself after my rather short performance at the show in Cologne in September. As I would be much more competitive in middleweight, I certainly welcomed Tim Woolgar's proposal that I would meet Sascha, who also was a natural middleweight. This filled me with a lot of enthusiasm and I significantly intensified my training. I was somewhat lacking in facilities; it i hard to find a boxing club close enough to where I live, so most of my boxing training consisted of pad-work with my boxing friends, coupled with plenty of shadowboxing. To compensate for this, however, I really had plenty of energy left over to work on my overall fitness level, with morning sprints and evening runs becoming an almost daily routine.
As it happened, however, Sascha was unable to make it to the event. That was quite a disappointment for me, since I was looking forward to getting some pay-off from all the hard work. I will still be fighting, as Tim suggested that he could fight me in an exhibition fight, but of course an exhibition fight with somebody who is so obviously bigger and heavier is not quite the same as the 'real thing' with somebody your own weight. Anyway, I am really grateful to Tim that he is able to step in this way, even though he will probably be pushing me around from corner to corner for the entire fight. But hey, there is a fight on the chessboard as well...
Anyway, it will be great to once again step into the ring. I am particularly looking forward to seeing Andy's and Volfram's fight, justifiably the evening's main event. And since I've met them both in Cologne and I know what great guys and committed athletes they are, it will be great to seeing them after the event as well.
